Songfacts®:

  • "An Unstoppable Force" is Echo & the Bunnymen's slow, string-laced ballad where Ian McCulloch reflects on losing his appetite for the chase and acknowledges that he won't be around forever.
  • The song opens with the lines:

One of these days, I know
I'll lose the will for the thrill of the chase

McCulloch is especially proud of that couplet. "That's probably the best lyric I've ever written, or anyone's ever written," he told Mojo magazine. He explained he enjoys writing catchy pop songs with layers, even if they take time to get right.

"It's been a real labor of love," he said. "Mountains are there to be climbed. I'm halfway up and I'm scared of ice, so I'm not going down."
  • McCulloch plays electric guitar on the track alongside Gordy Goudie, with Erica Nockalls contributing strings and Barrie Barlow handling drums.

Goudie is a Scottish guitarist who started out with The Primevals and played rhythm guitar with Echo & the Bunnymen from 2004 to 2017. He also played on their 2009 album The Fountain.

Nockalls, best known as the violinist for The Wonder Stuff, supported the Bunnymen on their 2023 Ocean Rain tour and joined them on the road again in 2024.

Barlow was Jethro Tull's drummer from 1971 to 1980 and later played on solo releases by Robert Plant and Jimmy Page.
  • "An Unstoppable Force" is the seventh track on Echo & the Bunnymen's 13th album, Apples for Isaac. The album debuted at #19 on the UK Albums Chart, giving the band their first Top 20 album of new material since 1997, when Evergreen reached #8 on the back of the hit single "Nothing Lasts Forever" - a ballad which McCulloch claimed is "the most important song I've ever written."
