Songfacts®:

  • Ed Sheeran became a father for the first time in 2020 when his wife, Cherry, gave birth to their daughter, Lyra. This song finds him telling his little girl she'll always be on his mind, even when he's touring thousands of miles away.
  • In March 2021, Sheeran flew to Australia to perform at the state memorial concert for Michael Gudinski. The Australian music impresario was Sheeran's mentor, and after he watched the funeral via a live video link, he spoke to Gudinski's daughter. He told Apple Music she said, "My dad always said that he loved me. The last thing he ever said to me was "I love you.'"

Sheeran thought to himself that as his daughter is just six months old, if he died tomorrow, she would never know how much she meant to him. So, he wrote this song as a message to Lyra, reminding his baby girl her daddy loves her.
  • This is one of two songs on Equals inspired by Lyra. The track "Sandman" also explores fatherhood.
  • Sheeran wrote the song solo. He co-produced it with the Swedish producer and songwriter Elvira Anderfjärd (Katy Perry's "What Makes A Woman," Anne-Marie's "Beautiful").
  • Elvira also played the bass, keyboards, drums, and supplied backing vocals. Equals executive producer Fred Again performed the piano, the only instrument Elvira didn't play.
