Although it was not his first hit, "For Me And My Gal" can't have done Edgar Leslie's reputation any harm. The lyricist, who a decade later would go on to co-write the massive hit "Among My Souvenirs
" with Englishman Horatio Nicholls, penned the lyrics with E. Ray Goetz. The music was composed by George W. Meyer, and the song was published by Waterson, Berlin & Snyder of New York in 1917 with singer Carrie Lillie on the front cover. This is considered a song that works best with a male vocal; a contemporary recording was made by Billy Murray, but it was not until 1942 that the name was hijacked for a musical in which it was performed by Gene Kelly and Judy Garland.
