Songfacts®:

  • Set in waltz time and composed in the key of D major, Enya dedicated this song to her producer Nicky Ryan's passed mother Mona. She explained: "When I moved to Dublin to work with Nicky and Roma (Nicky's lyricist wife), I got to know her very well. Mona was her name and she passed away a few years ago. I got very close to her. On writing the melody, I felt it was appropriate to dedicate the song to her. It's a slow melody, very emotional."

"This is something that is quite universal when the mother moves on. You think about what you left behind in your life. That's what you'll always remember."
