Songfacts®:

  • This song is said to be about Courtney Love. It refers to her dragging Kurt Cobain intro drugs, and ultimately being the cause of his suicide. "Why'd you have to go and let it die" most likely means why'd you have to go and let him die, or let Nirvana die in general.

Dave Grohl has said of the song: "It's a song that's written about feeling helpless to someone else's demise. I've seen people lose it all to drugs and heartbreak and death. It's happened more than once in my life, but the one that's most noted is Kurt. And there are a lot of people that I've been angry with in my life, but the one that's most noted is Courtney. So it's pretty obvious to me that those correlations are going to pop up every now and again." >>

  • Barbara from Visalia Ca I love this song, I play it at 4am in the morning. I blast it during the day. You can feel the beat and it can relate to a lot. I love FooFighters!!!
  • Renee from Youngsville, Laabsolutely love this song and his sarcasm... dave grohl is one of the best artist! just went to his concert in little rock and he puts on an amazing show!
  • Krystle from Orangeville, OnBefore you jump on the courtney-got-kurt-into-drugs bandwagon, you should some actually research on the singer you love so much, ormaybe even read or watch a biography, and youd learn that Kurt got Courtney heavily into the drugs again. Not vice versa like so many of you want to think. She was trying to be clean when she met him, and she got into the drugs heavily again after they got together.
  • Paul from Los Angeles, CaI'm an old guy and mostly into classical, not rock. But this song . . . I heard it on the radio and wound up buying it on iTunes. It actually makes me cry. I now realize it's about Kurt and Courtney, but on a another level I think it can apply to many other terrible losses in life. Kevin from Dallas nailed it: the progression from sadness and sorrow to shaking, burning rage is elemental and overwhelming.
  • Caitlyn from Royersford, PaI was so ticked when I bought the greatest hits cd and "Let it die" wasnt on it!! Especially since it's one of my favorites
  • Mark from Worcester, MiLet's not be silly here. It's so obvious who this song is directed at. How people can not see what is staring them right in the face is beyond me. If you can't tell from what you see and hear, then you don't want to see it, and it wouldn't help if it was titled "Courtney killed Kurt." People would say-"he knew other folks named Courtney and Kurt." He wanted his feelings out there with out doing an interview and hear you have it IMO.
  • Austn411 from Va. Beach, Vai love this song. and its true that people throw their lives away w/drugs
  • Gunnar from Birmingham, Althis song isnt about courtny dave says it in this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ykpPsdEXd8w&feature=related
  • John from Houston , TxDon't yall understand the interpretation of this song?!Its about a person letting the love die and it shows a feeling of helplessnes that on the lines "Why'd you have to go and let it die! Hearts gone cold and hands were tied!" Another thing is that the person they loved had a different side they'd never seen and it wasn't part of the person they fell in love with and that's shown on the line "I've seen your face in another light" and it shows that that person could've been a cheater.
  • Susie from Mpls, MnWhy cant fans understand the simplicity of personal responsability? Blaming Courtney is so "yoko ono". Kurt began using heroin long before he met Courtney nevermind (LOL) the pot and acid. I love KC but he made his own choices, you cant blame others for your own weakness and downfall and he knew this, he was so pissed and hurt when fans blamed her. To me this song is about the loss of Kurt and the band and of course the relationship he had with Courtney. Its all a big huge loss but conspiracy aside, Kurt chose to leave us all, and wee have a right to feel angry about that. The song lyrics and style are very near Kurts style but I still dont believe Courtney wrote it. Why doesnt anyone say that Grohl is a copycat? No, gotta blame the bitch...

  • Kevin from Dallas, TxThis song is amazing. The lyrics are haunting, but the actual music really sets the tone. It's an auditory depiction of the transition from sadness and sorrow to full blown rage. It starts off as a soft, mournful guitar piece. Then comes the soft drum beat and then the bass. These lead into the hardcore guitar and drums. Grohl's voice accentuates the transition as he starts the song in a mournful tone, slowly increases the volume, and by the end of the song, he is screaming at the top of his lungs. An absolutley amazing song showing the progression of emotions from sorrow to rage.
  • Cameron from Austin, Txthis song reminds me of the relationship my ex-girlfriend. She let our relationship die and never thought of me. This is such a great song and Courtney Love is a skanky whore
  • John from Houston , TxThis has to be their best song so far..........this will become a classic. This song helped me with situations cause its so freakin great!!!!
  • Teena from Mesa, AzDave Grohl is far more influential and has earned legend status IMO. He defines what a rock star should be. He is the most unpretentious person I've ever seen. He doesn't take himself seriously, but writes the most amazing lyrics.
  • Evan from Santa Rosa, CaWhile it is clear that this song is about Cobain, Dave has specifically made it clear that this is about Courtney Love's relationship with Cobain and not Grohl's relationship with Cobain.
  • Marcus from Richmond, Vathis is the one song that makes feel awesome off the e.s.p.and g. album :)
  • Kevin from Albany, OrOut of all the Foo songs that people says are about Kurt, this is the only one that really (I think) actually sounds like it is.
  • Bert from Pueblo, Nm"Did you ever think of me? You're so considerate"
Gotta love that sarcasm. Well done, Mr. Grohl
