"The Glass" is a tribute to Dave Grohl's late bandmate and close friend, Taylor Hawkins. The heartland rocker conveys the deep sense of loss and grief that Grohl feels following Hawkins' death in March 2022.
Grohl muses on the enduring link between the living and those who have passed. He and Hawkins shared a strong kindred spirit, like looking through a mirror. Now that Hawkins is gone, Grohl is left to carry on without him on his side of the glass, but he still sees his reflection.
Dave Grohl wrote "The Glass" alongside Foo keyboardist Rami Jaffee, bassist Nate Mendel and guitarist Chris Shiflett. Greg Kurstin produced the song. Kurstin has collaborated with Foo Fighters on several albums and is also known for his work with artists such as Adele, Beck and Paul McCartney.
Foo Fighters performed "The Glass" on the October 28, 2023, episode of Saturday Night Live along with "Rescued." Their rendition of "The Glass" also features R&B singer and songwriter H.E.R.
Foo Fighters released a double A-side single on November 17, 2023, comprising Foo Fighters' original version of "The Glass" and a reinterpretation of the song by H.E.R.. David "Swagg R'celious" Harris, a frequent collaborator of H.E.R., produced this version.

As a mom I can see this in the growing up of our children (them married), the loss of a son or other loved one and how life is just not what we expected when we were in high school. We were young an invisible then. Yes, we would grow up one day and do grown up things. However, we would be real old when bad stuff happened to us. Yeah, the joke was on us. We will survive and go on for those that aren’t here anymore.
Mom from UsaNo, not about Tyler. It is about his mother. It's about how he would visit her in the hospital and they had this glass between them during visits. He would see his reflection in the glass as he looked and talked to his mom and vice versa. The whole song is about his mom. The whole album is dealing with his pain and heartache of loosing BOTH of the important people in his life. But this song specifically speaks of his mom.
