Geese started out as literal basement kids. The band formed in 2016 they were still in high school, rehearsing and cutting early tracks in drummer Max Bassin's Fort Greene basement.
The band's name has a homegrown origin; it comes from guitarist Emily Green's longtime nickname, "Goose." It's just a private in-joke that stuck.
The group made their label debut in 2021 with Projector, an album they recorded between school days and weekend sessions, all under a strict 10 p.m. noise curfew to keep the neighbors happy. By the time it came out, they were barely old enough to drink but already attracting industry buzz.
The band almost didn't survive graduation. Several members had acceptance letters to top music schools like Oberlin and Berklee, and the plan was to split in 2020. But their self-produced demos set off a label bidding war - with interest from 4AD, Fat Possum, and Sub Pop - leading them to sign with Partisan Records instead of heading off to college.
Their original guitarist, Foster Hudson, left in 2023 to focus on academics. He played on their early records and through the 3D Country era.
Frontman Cameron Winter's voice stretches from a natural bass-baritone to falsetto, and he can pivot into a talk-singing snarl that recalls Alex Turner; a vocal range that helps define Geese's shape-shifting sound.
