Songfacts®:

  • Here, Gracie Abrams details the head-spinning intensity of a new infatuation, a wild ride of wanting more even if it means getting a little burned. "Close to you," she pleads, "pull the trigger on the gun I gave you when we met." Abrams is ready to be heartbroken, to be consumed by this fire.
  • "Close To You" bursts with a pulsing, synth-driven energy that's a far cry from Abrams' usual melancholic musings. Turns out, the song has been hiding in the vaults since Abrams' high school days in 2017. She co-wrote and produced it with New Zealand transplant Sam de Jong, who's also worked with Alec Benjamin, Ingrid Michaelson, and Marina.
  • Back when she wrote it, Abrams was still finding her voice, and "Close To You" is a fascinating glimpse into a different sonic direction. We hear a teenage Abrams banging out angsty lyrics accompanied by acoustic guitar and keyboard while Sam de Jong throws down a bed of keys, guitar, bass and drums.
  • "Close To You" is the closing track on The Secret Of Us, but it wasn't even supposed to make the album because it was from a different time entirely and didn't fit the vibe of the record. Abrams caved in after fans begged for its release.
  • "Close to You" plays in a pivotal scene towards the end of the last episode of Emily in Paris season 4.
