Songfacts®:

  • "Head On Fire" finds Griff linking up with Norwegian singer Sigrid. The pair croon about losing their senses over a guy.

I think I'm losing my mind
Over here, over you, every night
Both hands holding on to the wire
    Impossible fight

Griff and Sigrid can't get this man out of their head. So intense are their feelings for him, it's like their heads are on fire. "It's about that feeling when you meet someone who just flips everything upside down," Sigrid explained, "and you can't focus on anything else but that person."
  • After meeting for the first time at the Rueben Selby show during London's Fashion Week in London, Griff and Sigrid bonded and went out for pizza. A week later, they went to the studio together and spent the day talking about life, before writing "Head On Fire."

"I remember us both being super tired and in a weird place but we were pushing through, 'cause we both loved each other's music," Griff said. "Sigrid played with a fidget spinner all day."
  • Griff and Sigrid co-wrote the song with Joe Rubel. An Ed Sheeran cohort, Rubel played on several of his Equals tracks and co-produced "Tides," "Stop The Rain," and "Love In Slow Motion."
  • Griff and Joe Rubel also co-produced the song with Sam Tsang (Maisie Peters' "This Is On You," Stefflon Don's "Phone Down").
  • Griff and Sigrid attributed the song's success to the fact that they get on so well. "I think we're genuinely friends," Griff reasoned to NME. "I feel like it was birthed out of us actually really getting along with each other, and when we got into the studio, it wasn't that we wanted to write a collab, it was that we just wanted to hang out."
  • Griff and Sigrid reworked the track to feature contributions from King Princess and MØ. They released the new version on March 4, 2022.
