Songfacts®:

  • Peering through the tangle of incomplete sentences and cryptic phrasing, "Unsung" is about someone's fear of dying without being recognized for their contributions. It frequently uses "you" as though Helmet frontman Page Hamilton is addressing someone else, but he might be talking to himself.
  • While Hamilton's intention with this song is unclear, it proved interestingly predictive. With a Bachelor's degree from the University of Oregon and a Master's in jazz guitar from the Manhattan School of Music, Hamilton always valued technical acumen and artistic exploration over commercial appeal. Meantime, Helmet's second album, was expected to launch the band into superstardom as the smash 1991 success of Nirvana's Nevermind brought the alternative genre into the mainstream. Rather than hump the success of "Unsung" and Meantime, Hamilton kept pushing the band into different experiments. This, combined with contract disputes and the group simply becoming burnt out, led to the band disbanding in 1998. Hamilton and Helmet, which later featured a revolving lineup of musicians, continued putting out music and touring and maintained a passionate cult following, but commercially many consider them unsung when compared to the expectations of their heyday.
  • The video for "Unsung" got a lot of airplay on MTV. It got a further boost by winning the passionate approval of Beavis and Butthead during their 1993 "Beware the Butt" episode.
  • A year before the song's release on the album Meantime, Amphetamine Reptile Records released a 7-inch recording of an earlier version of "Unsung."
  • "Unsung" was the first single released off Meantime. Its success on the Alternative and Mainstream Rock charts drove the album to #68.
  • The WB adult animated sitcom Mission Hill included "Unsung" in the 2002 "Happy Birthday, Douchebag" episode. As were all licensed songs, it was pulled for the DVD release of the series in 2005.

The first season of the Fox series The Following (2013) used "Unsung," and it has been used in multiple video games, including Guitar Hero, True Crime: New York City, Saints Row 2, Madden NFL 10, and Grand Theft Auto: San Andrea.
