  • In the world of video games, if you're in godmode, your character can't be killed. You need to have admin access or some kind of cheat code to get into it. In this song, In This Moment frontwoman Maria Brink has a person that makes her feel like she's in godmode, but it's no love song. Brink, as she often does, goes to a dark place in the song, ripping this person apart after some kind of betrayal. "I'm gonna push and tear your throat, so keep coming," she warns.

When Brink evokes this kind of fury, it's often in response to her critics and doubters. She has a huge social media presence that gives her direct access to fans but also exposes her to negative elements as well. Her songs are often a way to overpower them.
  • Maria Brink isn't a gamer, but the title was her idea. She didn't pick up on the gaming connection until she ran it by guitarist Chris Howorth, her main collaborator in the band.

"This name, Godmode, is powerful, epic, limitless," she said in a Songfacts interview. "And then Chris when I told him, he's a huge gamer, and he was like, 'Actually, in the gaming world, godmode is something you can turn on that your character can't die and all these cool things.' So he loved the name right off the bat. It was a no-brainer for Chris and me. We loved the name."

"It felt right," Howorth added. "Everything flowed into place on this one."
  • Chris Howorth and Maria Brink wrote this song with their producer, Kane Churko. It was used as the title track to the album and released as the third single, following "I Would Die For You" (from the movie John Wick: Chapter 4) and "The Purge."

Kane is the son of Kevin Churko, who produced In This Moment's previous five albums.

The producer swap wasn't the only change for the band: They had a lot more time to work on the album because the pandemic kept them from touring. Instead of just a few months to make an album, they had a few years.
