Songfacts®:

  • "Unconditional" is Jade's disco-soaked love letter to her mum, Norma, who has lived with lupus and other health challenges for most of Jade's life. Norma, a primary school business manager with Yemeni and Egyptian roots, has been Jade's rock since the beginning. Little Mix fans might recall how often Jade has spoken about her family's influence, from her dad's Motown records to her mum's strength.
  • The song came from a very personal place. "All my life I've had the frustration of not being the one who can help her or save her," Jade explained. Then, in a very Jade-like way, she added: "I thought: how can I write a really sad song that we're all going to want to shake our tits to?"

Think of it as the spiritual cousin to "Shout Out To My Ex," except instead of celebrating resilience after heartbreak, it's resilience learned at home, set to a thumping disco beat.
  • "Unconditional" was the last track Jade wrote for her debut album, That's Showbiz Baby! Working with Mike Sabath and Pablo Bowman (who also helped her craft "Angel Of My Dreams" and "Fantasy"), Jade called the trio her "dream team." In fact, the chemistry was instant: "Fantasy" came together the day after "Angel of My Dreams," setting the pace for the record's early sessions.
  • Stylistically, Jade described the track to Apple Music's Zane Lowe as "Donna Summer meets MGMT" - a Frankenstein of sounds that, in her words, "creates what is the JADE of it all."
