Songfacts®:

  • Whilst lyrically the track is typical Jane's Addiction - a twisted lament regarding a friend's treatment of a fragile girl - musically it harkens back to the work of Pink Floyd. Guitarist Dave Gilmour of the '70s psychedelic rock act was a major influence for Dave Nararro's axe work on this song. He told Mojo magazine: "My playing on that is heavily David Gilmour-influenced: lyrical rather than shredding. Floyd were great with ambiance, and if you listen to 'Irresistible Force' you'll hear we're using more ambient textures than we have before."
