Songfacts®:

  • Most of us first heard Jill Scott on her 2000 hit "A Long Walk," a breezy tune about a date with a guy she really digs. But another song from her debut album, Who Is Jill Scott?, was released ahead of it as a single: "Gettin' In The Way," a song where she's ready to throw hands with a woman who is after her man. This contradiction - soft and sweet in love but highly combative when pushed - is true-to-life for Scott, a Philadelphia native who embodies both the sweetness of the city and its love for a good brawl.
  • The song did pretty well in the UK, charting at #30, thanks in part to Scott performing it at the MOBO Awards - her first UK TV appearance. In America, the song peaked at #115 in December 2000; "A Long Walk" did a lot better, going to #43 in March 2001.
  • The song was produced by Vidal Davis, who co-wrote it with Scott. He's part of the Dre & Vidal team along with Andre Harris. They also worked on "Oh" by Ciara and "Caught Up" by Usher.
