Songfacts®:

  • When Hootie & the Blowfish went on hiatus in 2008, their drummer, Jim Sonefeld, started making Christian music. "I Decree" is a track from his first Christian EP, Found. He told Songfacts the story behind it:

"I became inspired by a video I saw of a child preacher, Isaiah Jackson, 'decreeing and declaring' in prayer to a church audience. At the time, though I was already writing Christian-themed lyrics, I was unsure about singing my songs to an audience. I felt called to be more bold in my faith. When I saw little Isaiah I thought if this kid can be so bold, then I guess I can too!

I was at the piano in our home in South Carolina when I wrote it. Being new to writing in this genre, I would scour the Bible as I was reading it for daily guidance, hoping phrases would pop out to inspire me. When I wrote the lyric, 'I've been looking for the answer,' it's quite literal, as I indeed had my nose in the bible at the time."
  • Sonefeld recorded this song in Nashville with session musicians from the area. It was produced by Stan Lynch, a longtime member of Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers.
