Songfacts®:

  • This track is built around a soulful sample from "Liberty" by the Indianapolis-based group Amnesty. It begins with sped up vocals from the 1973 song featuring lyrics about finding common ground:

The hang ups we have today
We need to strive for more liberty
    Lift yourself upon your feet

The second half features Kanye West rapping nonsense lyrics:

    Poopy-di scoop
    Scoop-diddy-whoop
    Whoop-di-scoop-di-poop

    The track then abruptly ends.
  • It is believed that "Lift Yourself" is a tongue-in-cheek statement directed at WQHT Hot 97 radio host Ebro Darden, who had questioned West on April 25, 2018 after the rapper sent out a series of tweets in support of President Donald Trump. Hours before the track's release two days later, West teased "Lift Yourself" by promising a song that would "bring Ebro the closure he's been seeking."
