Songfacts®:

  • "Small Talk" is a perky track where Katy Perry reflects on an awkward encounter with an ex.

    Acting like we never met
    Faking like we'd just forget
    We were lovers
And now there's nothing left but small talk

Though Perry knows everything about her former soulmate, their emotional distance means he is now just an acquaintance, and their conversations are nothing but small talk.
  • Perry co-wrote this post-breakup song with Charlie Puth, Jacob Kasher and Johan Carlsson. Puth and Kasher previously collaborated on Puth's hit song "Attention"; the Swedish producer Carlsson has also worked with Ariana Grande ("Dangerous Woman ") and James Arthur ("Naked").

Charlie Puth produced the track with Peter Karlsson producing the vocals.
  • The Tanu Muino-directed dog-tastic video sees Perry and her real-life micro poodle, Nugget, training for and attending the Mutt Ball. The canine show, whose slogan is "making fetch happen," features a number of people who look like their respective pooches. After winning the trophy, Katy finds love with the handsome owner of a pet Weimaraner. At first, the singer's tiny poodle feels left out before it finds a friend too.
