Songfacts®:

  • Anderson originally wrote this, together Jason Sellers and Tim Nichols, after a relationship break-up. However after his mother was diagnosed with brain cancer, this song took on a new meaning of loss. Anderson explained on his website: "After Mom got diagnosed with brain cancer, through that next six months everything about her was beginning to change. It wasn't the same Mom, and I was already missing who she was. And certainly, just recently she passed, and the song is even deeper."
  • Anderson decided to make the music video about the loss of a loved one rather than its original subject matter of broken hearts. He explained on his website: "Most of the calls we were getting at radio stations were people who had lost someone in the war or who had lost a parent or son or daughter, and it was beginning to touch more people like that. I wanted to make it about loss and a tribute to my mom and everything we were going through as a family."
  • This was the first of Anderson's own recordings to reach the Top 50 of the Hot 100. Previously he'd co-written Big & Rich's single "Lost In This Moment," a #36 hit on the Hot 100 chart in 2007.
