Songfacts®:

  • "Happy Mistake" is a deeply personal power ballad written by Lady Gaga and her longtime collaborator BloodPop. The track finds its home on Harlequin, the companion album to the musical thriller movie Joker: Folie à Deux, in which Gaga takes on the role of Harley Quinn.
  • Throughout the song, Gaga reflects on her career and complicated relationship with worldwide adoration. The chorus doesn't pull any punches: "My head is filled with broken mirrors," she sings, a line that speaks to the overwhelming pressure she feels to keep up appearances, even as the cracks start to show.

But amid all that weight, there's this underlying hope, a yearning for a "happy mistake" to somehow turn it all around.
  • At a listening party in London, Gaga explained that "Happy Mistake" is "a reflection of every album I've ever made and all the songs I've ever written." She views it as a celebration of the darkness that has healed her and the various identities she has created throughout her career.
  • Though the song doesn't appear in Joker: Folie à Deux, it still ties into Gaga's portrayal of Harley Quinn. The lyrics, full of references to acting and putting on a performance, mirror Harley's - and The Joker's - elaborate theatrics.
  • Harlequin contains 13 tracks, mostly covers of classic jazz standards and show tunes, a spiritual cousin to Gaga's earlier jazz albums with Tony Bennett. It is separate from but related to the official Joker: Folie à Deux film soundtrack.
  • Gaga said the idea for the album came after filming ended, but she wasn't quite ready to say goodbye to the character. At the London premiere, she stated:

"When we were done with the movie, I wasn't done with her. Because I'm not done with her, I made Harlequin."
