Songfacts®:

  • Land of Color is the Colorado-bred Thomas Ewing and the South Africa native Gary Rea, who came together in Nashville, combining their disparate musical influences. "Morning Song" is about living in the moment. Says Ewing, "Something we are constantly faced with is being present in the now. Lots of songs are looking at our surroundings, and tangible things. But, to be thankful for what we have and where we are, the people that surround us is something we often can take for granted."
  • This song came about spontaneously in the studio when the duo got together to record some other tracks. When they started sharing musical ideas, "Morning Song" started to emerge, so they dropped what they were doing to write and record the song in that session. It's an example of how they work in a non-linear fashion, always willing to explore ideas that come up.
  • Regarding how this song relates to their spiritual beliefs and who it's addressing, Gary Rea told Songfacts: "In the midst of all the anxiety and insecurity that surviving in this world can breed, 'Morning Song' is about taking a deep breath. Whether you're a person of faith or not, it's about realizing that we are part of a bigger plan than what we realize. This song is for any of us who spend our lives trying to be loved, valued and excepted, and a reminder that we already are."
