Songfacts®:

  • "Destiny" started as a song about Destiny Niemeier, fiancée of LANY frontman Paul Klein, but broadened into something broader and more universal.

The song works as a love letter to the real-life Destiny, and Klein sang it directly to her at a New York City show during the band's Soft Tour. It has a more universal appeal in that it's a song of encouragement to anyone dealing with heartbreak, encouraging us to have the guts to love again, but it goes even deeper than that. Klein told American Songwriter, "That one I felt like - where I did feel like other ones were about a specific person, but you could also find yourself in them - 'Destiny' I felt like could be about a person, but I felt like it wasn't really about a person. It was more of: you have your arms open for what's next."
  • "Destiny" appears on LANY's sixth album, Soft. The song encapsulates the album's theme, which was the willingness to open one's heart in a harsh world.
  • Klein wrote the song with two other songwriters. One was Jamaican vocalist Michael "Jimmy" James (who passed away in 2024) of UK band Jimmy James and the Vagabonds, active through the 1960s and '70s. The other was Aodhan King of Australian Christian band Hillsong Young & Free.
