Songfacts®:

  • "Heavenly Kind Of State Of Mind" is a musical love letter where Lewis Capaldi expresses his deep affection for his beloved. He infuses the lyrics with biblical imagery to convey the magnitude of his feelings in a transcendent and uplifting manner.

And I feel the rapture when I'm looking at ya
Oh, what a heavenly kind of state of mind
You're the only reason that I keep believing

The song conveys the euphoria Capaldi experiences when thinking about his sweetheart, emphasizing the divine nature of their connection. He sees her as a gift from above, a celestial blessing in his life.
  • During the chorus, Capaldi ponders whether his lover was heaven sent to rescue him.

Whether you were heaven-sent to save me from above
Or the only one who doesn't hate me, that's enough
Well I need someone to save me from original sin
You call me like a chorus only angels can sing
Now I think about you all of the time
Oh, what a heavenly kind of state of mind

"There was a worry that people would think this song was about how much I love Jesus, and listen, big fan of JC," Capaldi told Apple Music. "I wanted it to sound like I'd been saved by a partner, rather than Jesus, but it works both ways. So if you love Jesus, this song's for you."
  • Capaldi co-wrote "Heavenly Kind Of State Of Mind" with Nick Atkinson, Edd Holloway and Jamie Hartman. He began the song in Scotland with Atkinson and Holloway while they were working on tracks for his second album, Broken By Desire To Be Heavenly Sent. "We started this synth-led ballad that was all falsetto in the style of Bon Iver, which I don't usually do," he said. "We couldn't work out where to go with it."

"Cut to a few months later, we're in Hitchin recording in a studio with Jamie Hartman, who I worked with on the first record," Capaldi continued. "We showed him this idea and he just sang, 'Whether you were heaven.' The first kernel of the chorus melody came out of his mouth and from there it just kinda flew out."
  • Capaldi, Atkinson and Holloway previously co-wrote another song that revolves around biblical symbolism. The Scottish singer's 2018 single "Grace" paints a picture of a life on the brink until he found salvation in the form of his lover's grace.
