Songfacts®:

  • "Wish You The Best" is an emotional ballad where Lewis Capaldi's former girlfriend is rubbing her amazing new life in the singer's face.

Right now, you're probably by the ocean
While I'm still out here in the rain

Meanwhile, Capaldi reflects on leaving things unsaid in relationships.

I wanna say, "I wish that you never left"
Oh, but instead, I only wish you the best
  • Lewis Capaldi spilled the tea about the song to Scott Mills on BBC Radio 2. He said it's about your ex moving on and you know it's good for them, but deep down you're dying to tell them how much you miss them and why they should stay with you. But instead, you just say "good luck" and pretend to be happy for them while secretly feeling like crap.
  • Capaldi partly wrote the song in Los Angeles with Canadian singer-songwriter JP Saxe and Malay. The pop star finished "Wish You The Best" at home in Glasgow.

This is Capaldi's first collaboration with JP Saxe. The Canadian's 2020 EP, Hold It Together, features the hit single "If the World Was Ending" with Julia Michaels.

Malay is the stage name of James Ryan Ho, an American record producer and songwriter. He is best known for his work with Frank Ocean, including the albums Channel Orange and Blonde. Malay has also worked with other artists, such as John Legend, Zayn, and Lorde. He previously collaborated with Capaldi on "Fade," a track from the Scot's debut Divinely Uninspired to a Hellish Extent album.
  • Lewis Capaldi co-produced "Wish You The Best" with TMS, a production team comprising Pete Kelleher, Ben Kohn, and Tom Barnes. Their previous collaborations include some of his biggest hits, such as "Someone You Loved," "Before You Go" and "Forget Me."
  • Capaldi first performed "Wish You The Best" at the First Direct Arena, Leeds, England on January 14, 2023 during his Broken by Desire to Be Heavenly Sent Tour.
  • Capaldi released "Wish You the Best" as the fourth single from Broken by Desire to Be Heavenly Sent on April 14, 2023. Capaldi kept the recording of the album simple, using only a small interface, laptop, speakers, and a Shure SM7B vocal mic. He also made the record with most of the same people who he worked with on Divinely Uninspired to a Hellish Extent.
  • The tear-jerking visual tells the story of John, an elderly mail carrier, and his best friend Willow, a scruffy but adorable dog. As the video progresses, it follows the pair through the cycle of life, from birth to death. Along the way, the clip explores the pain of loss and the redemptive power of love. The video is a heartfelt look at the power of companionship and the importance of cherishing every moment.
  • "Wish You The Best" is the last song Capaldi wrote for Broken By Desire To Be Heavenly Sent. "I'm really bad with change and moving on," he told The Independent. "I look at people I went to school with on Instagram, and they're having kids or buying houses with a partner, and I have a really hard time with that. You can feel things passing you by. I know I'm not exactly 70 years old or whatever, but it does feel like a chapter in your life is closing when you don't know those people any more."

Capaldi added he put some of those emotions into the story of a relationship ending for "Wish You The Best," because he feels that break-ups can trigger that "selfish thing in you that wants to hold on to the past. That slight anger in the feeling of abandonment. But you never actually tell them that. You just say 'I'm pleased for you', and you swallow the other stuff."
  • The song became Capaldi's fifth UK #1 hit, and third in less than a year, following "Someone You Loved" (2019), "Before You Go" (2020), "Forget Me" (2022) and "Pointless" (2023).
