Songfacts®:

  • "500lbs" is a hip-hop song with elements of drill music. The song is about Lil Tecca's wealth, success, lifestyle, and devotion to his girl.
  • Don't know when I stay out of town
I get dough when I stay out of town
Five hundred chops, I got five hundred rounds
Five hundred plots, I got five hundred pounds, yeah

Lil Tecca's all about jet-setting, soaking in global scenes, but he's also loves vibing in his crib. He told Genius in a video: "It's like, 'Yeah, I get dough when I stay out of town,' but I'm really tryna be home right now."
  • So, why name the track after weight instead of cash? Lil Tecca's playing with metaphors, maybe talking about the weight of fame or the expectations he's carrying.

Or maybe it's just a catchy phrase he thought would stick. You know, something easy to remember and belt out. Titles matter for hits.

And the reason for the "lbs" instead of spelling out "pounds"? It's that chill vibe, keeping it informal. Also tossing in "pounds" instead of "dollars" adds that UK flavor, shouting out Tecca's overseas adventures.
  • Tecca laid down "500lbs" in an LA studio. Rio Leyva crafted the beat, and when Tecca found out hitmaking producer Taz Taylor threw in his sauce too, it got real serious. "I really had to like, lock in on that beat and write for like thirty minutes, and make something that I really was proud of," he told Genius, "and then it came out to be something that I was really proud of."
  • Tecca first previewed "500lbs" on June 2, 2023, through Taz Taylor's Instagram story. He released it as the second single from this third album, Tec, on July 21, 2023. By mid-November 2023, it had been certified Gold (500,000 units).
