Songfacts®:

  • In this lonely folk-pop groove, Lissie is haunted by bittersweet memories of a past love during an evocative summer night. "The song itself is about being reminded of the absence of someone dear," she explained ahead of the release of her fifth studio album, Carving Canyons. "From the way the breeze feels on your skin, to the light of the fire, all the sense memories a summer evening elicits."
  • The music video, directed by Sergio Cilli (who also directed the Funny or Die comedy Neighbors), was filmed outside of Portland, Oregon. It begins with Lissie leaving her boyfriend and unfolds showing her lonely nights reliving their time together. The singer described the concept: "In the video I'm seen solo and with a partner, as well as my higher self. The parallel versions of what was or could be. A love lost that haunts but as time goes by, you recover from."
  • This is album's second single, following "Flowers," which is another song dealing with the emotions surrounding a breakup.
  • The theme of Carving Canyons as a whole is about staying optimistic in the face of an uncertain future. It wasn't always an easy frame of mind to stay in during the making of the album amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

"Some days it was so terrifying that I didn't know how to carry on - and then I realized, 'How exciting. What a gift,'" Lissie explained. "The road in front of me is wide open."
  • The album reunited Lissie with producer Curt Schneider, who worked as a songwriter and producer on her previous albums, Catching A Tiger, My Wild West, and Castles.
