Songfacts®:

  • In "Haunted," Luke Grimes has not only come to grips with his memories of a lost loved one, he's come to feel grateful for them. In the song he describes having been haunted by ghosts and memories before finding peace among them because it's all he's got left of the person who left him behind.
  • Dave Cobb, well-known for his work with Chris Stapleton and Sturgill Simpson (among others), produced "Haunted" along with the rest of Red Bird, Grimes' second album. He also co-wrote "Haunted" and several other tracks on Red Bird.
  • Jessie Jo Dillon filled out the songwriting trio that crafted "Haunted." She'd previously worked on hundreds of songs and earned multiple accolades, with her biggest associated hit being "10,000 Hours" for Dan + Shay.
  • Grimes split recording sessions between Nashville's RCA Studio A and the Georgia May Studio in Savannah, Georgia.
  • "Haunted" was prominently featured in the 2026 CBS series Marshals, a sequel to the hit Yellowstone series that ran from 2018 to 2024 on Paramount. Grimes also starred in the show as former Navy SEAL Kayce Dutton.
  • "Haunted" fits in neatly with the theme of Red Bird. In his interview with American Songwriter, Grimes explained that Red Bird is "honestly all over the place and we were trying to take sort of a portrait of a person at a time."

He added: "I think a lot of people, if we're being really honest with ourselves, can be a little all over the place at times.

And especially in that time, I was a new father, just a lot of change happening in my life. So there's a lot of love in my life and then there's a lot of loss. And there was still some immature man in there who didn't quite know how to deal with it perfectly. Not that there's not now. I'm just saying, talking about then.

We just kind of wanted it to be this snapshot of all the things that I was going through. And the way that we went about accomplishing that was really different and a very different process than anything I'd seen or had done on my first album."
