  • So many things that I still wanna say
And if devotion is a river, then I'm floating away

One might think Maggie Rogers is singing about a relationship with a lover she can see herself comfortably settling into. Sonically, the soft rock tune hints at the romance being set in the last days of summer (as does the cover art). So, who is the object of the singer's enduring attraction? Turns out it's a lot of people. Rogers explained:

"It's a song about love in all its forms - romantic love, the love I feel for my friends, the love I feel for my band, and the love I've shared with all of you. I wanted it to sound like the last days of summer. I wanted it to sound as wild and alive as new love feels."
  • The song was Rogers' first new music since her debut album, Heard It In A Past Life. The Maryland native actually started writing the tune the day before "Light On," but didn't finish and record it until August 2019. She said: "For various reasons, but mostly scheduling, the song was left unfinished and unrecorded, but it always stuck with me and I've found its melody weaving in and out of my brain for the last year and a half."
  • "Love You For a Long Time" was produced by Ricky Reed (Halsey's "Bad at Love," Lizzo's "Truth Hurts"). He previously collaborated with Rogers on the Heard It In A Past Life tracks "Say It" and "Burning."
