Songfacts®:

  • Manuel Turizo is a Colombian reggaeton singer whose music also contains influences from pop music, trap, and Colombian folk music. After his 2016 breakthrough song "Una Lady Como Tú" charted throughout the Spanish-speaking world, Turizo has continued to rack up hits throughout Latin America, including "La Bachata," which broke into the all-genre Billboard Hot 100.
  • "La Bachata" finds a heartbroken Turizo driving down the streets and listening to the songs that bring back memories of his ex. Though his former lover hurt him, he still misses her. "The lyrics of the song," he told Billboard, "perfectly describe that moment when you want to reach out to your ex and ask them to give it another try. But we shouldn't even ask for it. If the person wants to return to your side, they will."
  • Bachata is a style of romantic dance music originating in the Dominican Republic. This song marks Turizo's first foray into the genre.
  • Mexican songwriter and producer Edgar "Edge" Barrera produced the song and co-wrote it with Turizo. Edge's other credits include Ariana Grande's "Boyfriend" and Camila Cabello's "Bam Bam."
  • When Edge Barrera came up with "La Bachata," he wanted to create something with a distinctive sound, craving a departure from the monotony of everything sounding alike. "There was this repetitive pattern in Latin music at that time," he explained to Billboard.
  • "La Bachata" was originally intended for another artist until Manuel Turizo reached out to collaborate. When asked if he had any songs to showcase, Barrera hesitated, saying, "I have a song, but it's a bachata - I don't know how much you see yourself singing a bachata." He played it for him, and Turizo's response was clear: "Bro, I'd like to record something different too." So, Turizo took a gamble on the song.
