Songfacts®:

  • Malcolm Graham is a drill rapper who goes by the name of Mazza L20. Graham was jailed in 2016 after detectives found footage on his iPhone which showed him test-firing a Russian-made Baikal automatic pistol used in a murder.

He gained notoriety in 2018 while incarcerated for firearm offenses when his music videos, illegally recorded and uploaded to social media, blew up like fireworks. His songs often glorify violence and gang culture, and he has been criticized for his lyrics and their potential impact on young people.

After recording this song with Pistol PO while behind bars, it made waves in the underground scene.
  • "Murdaside" dives deep into the gritty streets of Liverpool, where violence and gangs run wild. Mazza gloats about gun crime and strikes fear into "rats" those snitching to the cops. The title itself is a sly nod to Mazza's turf in Merseyside, known for its crime and gang scene.
  • Mazza won't let anyone fake the Scouser vibe.

Ask him where he's from, he's not a Scouser, he said, "Merseyside"

Mazza sets you straight – a true Scouser would rep Liverpool not Merseyside.
  • Deep faked versions of the song were shared on the internet. Digital editing was used on the outside to replace Mazza L20's vocals with phoney voices of Liverpool footballing legends Steve Gerrard and Jamie Carragher.
  • The song's music video, illegally shot while Mazza L20 was in prison, was shared extensively on the internet, fueled by TikTok.
  • After being released from prison, Mazza promoted "Murdaside" with a series of remixes. On November 9, 2023, he dropped his "Murdaside Remix" with heavy hitters Manchester MC Aitch and northwest London rapper Potter Payper. Each artist spits for their ends, creating a nationwide banger. The new version gave Mazza L20 his first UK Top 40 hit when it entered the chart at #18.
  • Aitch included the remix on his Lost Files EP. "I've just seen what he was doing and representing up north, and I feel like it's good to champion people from local areas to me," he told NME.

Aitch added he always would hear "Murdaside" being played and that all his friends were playing it.

Aitch revealed he "messaged [Mazza L20] one time, just said, 'Hope you're good,' and he said, 'Yo, I want you on this remix,' and I said, 'Say no more, let's do it.'"
