Songfacts®:

  • "Neva Play" is a collaboration between Megan Thee Stallion and BTS rapper RM. Megan previously teamed up with RM and his K-pop bandmates in August 2021 for a remix of their hit "Butter." That collaboration was all bright beats and bubblegum fun, with Megan even performing live with the group a few months later. But "Neva Play" is a whole different animal.

This time around, Megan and RM have gone for a moodier, more urgent trap sound, creating an earworm that's all about getting stuff done, no matter what.
  • Megan kicks off the track with her signature style, spitting out lines that underline her unbreakable confidence and success. She doesn't shy away from throwing a little shade, either, with a particularly pointed line:

Beefin' with yourself because you do not exist in my world

While she doesn't name names, the nod to her rumored beef with Nicki Minaj is hard to miss. For those not keeping score, Megan and Nicki's feud has been simmering since Megan teamed up with Cardi B, Nicki's rap rival, on the smash hit "WAP."
  • RM delivers his verse with a smooth blend of bravado and humility. He acknowledges BTS' role in paving the way for other K-pop acts, adding a layer of depth to the song's overall themes of empowerment and ambition.
  • RM recorded his verse just before heading off for mandatory military service in South Korea in December 2023. "Neva Play" is part of a collection of prerecorded material he left behind, including a full sophomore solo album titled Right Place, Wrong Person.
  • Behind the scenes, "Neva Play" brings together a small army of producers: LilJuMadeDaBeat, Shae Jacobs, B Ham, and Peter Fenn.

Dallas-based producer Julian "LilJuMadeDaBeat" Mason is no stranger to working with Megan; he's been her go-to beatmaker since 2017. Some of their most memorable collaborations include "Cash S---," "Body" and "Hiss."
