Songfacts®:

  • "Fluke" spins a tale of an LA bus "star tour" where the boulevard is lined with shattered dreams. Like many of Michael Head's songs, "Fluke" emerged from keen observation, in this instance witnessing a conversation between two girls on a bench. "One was a PR, the other was a manager, and the immediacy, the speed with which they got things done blew me away," he recalled to Mojo magazine. "They'd organized a trip to LA within 30 seconds! The story evolved from that, but when they get to LA it takes on a The Day of The Locust, Karen Black feel to it."
  • Michael Head & the Red Elastic Band recorded "Fluke" for their second album, Dear Scott. The album's title is a nod to a note-to-self penned by American author F Scott Fitzgerald when he was down on his luck.
  • A revered figure in the English music scene, Michael Head finally claimed his well-deserved moment in the sun when Dear Scott reached #6 on the UK albums chart. The critics were enraptured too; When Mojo magazine and Uncut magazine published their Best Albums of 2022 year end lists, Mojo ranked Dear Scott the best album of the year and Uncut the third.
