Songfacts®:

  • Here, Mitchell Tenpenny addresses an ex. Since their breakup, she's been telling false stories about him, which is ruining his reputation. Moreover, though she blames Tenpenny for all their problems during their relationship, she wasn't whiter than white herself. The woman had anger management and jealousy issues, but the final nail in the coffin came when he "caught her red-handed."

Tenpenny suggests a truce. If she stops spreading untrue tales about him, he won't tell the truth about her.
  • When Tenpenny wrote "Truth About You" with Matt Alderman and Thomas Archer, he had a former girlfriend in mind. He also incorporated experiences his friends had gone through, and even some of his own unacceptable behavior in relationships. "You try to channel what's happened before," Tenpenny told Evan and Amber of Taste of Country Nights. "It was just one of those songs. When I heard the title... I was like, 'I know how to write this song. I've lived this song.' And it just kinda fell out."
  • Tenpenny recorded "Truth About You" for Midtown Diaries and released it as the EP's lead single on July 9, 2021.
  • Director Dustin Haney (Jameson Rodgers, Halestorm) shot the video at Bobby's Idle Hour bar and Warren Studios in Nashville.
