Songfacts®:

  • Nero are a drum and bass and dubstep duo from London, consisting of producers Dan Stephens and Joe Ray. Nero have remixed the likes of La Roux, Daft Punk and Deadmau5 and won the 2010 Beatport's Best Dubstep Act. Their cut, "Act Like You Know It," also won Beatport's Best Dubstep Track.
  • This single features the voice of Alana Watson, who frequently provides vocals on Nero's songs.
  • Having released music since 2008, the song became Nero's first mainstream hit record when it debuted at #15 on the UK singles chart in January 2011. The duo stated in their interview with BBC Radio 1's Zane Lowe that they drew their inspiration for "Me and "You" from rock and indie music.
  • This has nothing to do with the drum and bass group but we couldn't resist it. Did you know the Roman Emperor Nero fancied himself as a musician? His first stage performance was at Naples where he recited poetry and sang and played music. It is said there was an earth tremor in the theatre as he sang. Nero continued to perform publicly as a singer and at the 66AD Olympic Games in Greece he entered the singing contest (yep, the Olympics wasn't just about sport in those days). He was judged the winner even though according to Suetonius some male listeners fell off the wall and feigned death in order to remove themselves from earshot without causing imperial offense. He also inserted a special event for himself at the Olympics - lyre playing - which he conveniently won.
  • This is lighter and more upbeat than most of Nero's material. Joe Ray explained to Time Out magazine this was probably because of where they were when they wrote the song. He explained: "We wrote 'Me & You' around a pool in LA, which was fun. There was something about the hot weather and drinking a cocktail in the sun that made us write a happy tune, whereas our other songs have an angry and dark vibe to them. Maybe that's why, because we were sitting in the sun having a nice time. Maybe we should do that more often, rather than sitting in a cold, grey studio in Waterloo."
