• Niall Horan rose to global fame as a member of One Direction, one of the best-selling boy bands of all time. Born in Mullingar, he is the only Irish-born member of the group (the others are English).
• His parents, Bobby and Maura, divorced when he was 5. Horan and his older brother Greg initially lived with their mother before moving in with their father. He attended Coláiste Mhuire, a Christian Brothers school in Mullingar.
• Horan taught himself guitar at age 11 using YouTube tutorials after picking up a guitar his brother received as a gift but rarely used. His singing talent was first noticed by his aunt, who once mistook his voice for the car radio.
• As a teenager, he performed locally, including a fundraiser at Mullingar Arts Centre for the Shamrocks GAA team, and secured a support slot for Lloyd Daniels at The Academy in Dublin.
• In 2010, aged 16, Horan auditioned for The X Factor with Ne-Yo's song "So Sick." Guest judge Katy Perry felt he needed more time to develop, and he was eliminated as a solo act. He was then grouped with Harry Styles, Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson, and Zayn Malik to form One Direction.
• One Direction made chart history as the first UK act to debut at #1 in the US with their first album, and the first boy band in US chart history to score two #1 albums in the same calendar year.
• Horan launched his solo career in 2016 with "This Town." His debut album, Flicker (2017), reached #1 in the US and #3 in the UK, establishing him as a successful solo artist.
• Known for his blond hair, blue eyes, and approachable image, Horan's look has evolved from youthful pop styling to a more refined, understated aesthetic. His fashion sense has similarly matured, shifting toward tailored menswear, knitwear, and muted tones.
• A passionate golfer since childhood, Mullingar Golf Club awarded Horan lifetime membership in 2014. He later became an ambassador for ISPS Handa and regularly participates in celebrity pro-am tournaments.
• A close friend of Rory McIlroy, Horan caddied for the Northern Irish golfer at the Masters Par-3 Contest at Augusta National in April 2015 after McIlroy texted him out of the blue asking if he fancied carrying the bag. As he and McIlroy walked over to Sky Sports presenter Kirsty Gallacher for a post-round interview, Horan's feet gave way on the slippery pine needles and he crashed to the ground along with the clubs. He has since called the fall probably the most embarrassing thing that has ever happened to him on camera.
• Horan began a long-term relationship with Amelia "Mia" Woolley in 2020. She inspired many of his songs, including tracks on his albums The Show (2023) and Dinner Party (2026). The 2025 song "Dinner Party" recounts the night they first met.
• Speaking on the Dish from Waitrose podcast, Horan took aim at the American habit of mixing sweet and savory at breakfast. "You got big fat streaky bacon dripping and then you just like have strawberries," he said. "I just don't really get it."
• In 2023 he became a coach on season 23 of The Voice, returning for seasons 24 and 28. His team won all three seasons. Season 23 winner Gina Miles opened for Horan on some of his tour dates in 2024.
• Horan cops to being claustrophobic, possibly stemming from a childhood incident with an inflatable. "When I was a kid, someone unplugged a bouncy castle at someone's birthday party, and I wound up in the middle of it and freaked out," he said on the Off The Record podcast. "Since then I've been scarred. I'm quite claustrophobic."
