Songfacts®:

  • This countrified acoustic guitar ballad finds the boys reminiscing about an old summer fling. One Direction's Zayn Malik told MTV News this is his favorite track from Take Me Home. "I really like 'Summer Love' because it's kind of different from anything we've done before," he said. "It's a cool ballad and a really great concept. I think everyone has kind of been through that experience and can relate to that song."
  • Steve Robson and Wayne Hector penned the song along with One Direction. The English songwriters also co-wrote with the boys the Up All Night tracks, "Everything About You" and "Same Mistakes."
  • This was one of three songs on Take Me Home that One Direction contributed towards the songwriting. 1D's Liam Payne told Billboard magazine that most times they'd split into groups of three when penning songs. "It's nice to have to have two people around," he said. "When you have more than two people working together it gets a bit unfocused as an idea. We tend to pair off a little bit. It was nice on this album because the room was laid out to write the songs. We'd work with a topline writer and just write about whatever we were thinking about that day."
