  • Overpass are a Birmingham, England four-piece fronted by singer-guitarist Max Newbold. The band specializes in big, singalong choruses that pair Bruce Springsteen-style working-class imagery with the everyday anxieties of getting older. It's a sound that quickly took them from sold-out local gigs to opening for bands in arenas.
  • Frontman Max Newbold and bassist India "Indie" Armstrong first started playing music together as 15-year-olds, long before Overpass came to be. The band fell into place in early 2020 after Newbold posted an Instagram callout for musicians just weeks ahead of the UK's first COVID-19 lockdown. Guitarist Elliot Rawlings answered the post, and drummer Jake Bishop later completed the core lineup through mutual friends.

That lineup had one early twist behind the kit. Before Bishop permanently took over, their original drummer was Joe Gallagher. Bishop, a fellow student at the Birmingham Institute of Contemporary Music Performance, joined shortly after, taking the throne for the band's EPs and debut album.
  • The band sold out their planned debut gig at Birmingham's Sunflower Lounge in March 2020, only for lockdown to force a cancellation that same week. The forced downtime turned out to be a blessing in disguise. Instead of gigging, the four spent months rehearsing and writing original material, a period Newbold credits with shaping their identity.

"When we played our first gig, we actually had originals and it felt worth it," Newbold told Silence and Sound, adding with a laugh that they were relieved the original show was canceled because it "would have just been ten Catfish and the Bottlemen covers."
  • Their name nods to Spaghetti Junction, the sprawling, multi-level motorway interchange on the edge of Birmingham. "It's cool, it's one of those one-worders that are just good," Newbold told Silence & Sound. "If it was The Overpass, we wouldn't be here now."
  • Within the band dynamic, each member plays a distinct role. Bishop calls Newbold "the driving force which inspires us all," while Newbold considers Bishop "the backbone, like any great drummer." Rawlings acts as the detail-oriented organizer, and Armstrong is universally dubbed "the brains of the operation."
  • Overpass' debut album, Elsewhere, Always, landed at #5 on the UK Albums Chart following its June 2026 release on Communion Records. The record also topped both the Official Record Store Chart and the Independent Albums Chart that same week.
