Songfacts®:

  • "Piece by Piece" is one of the five original songs that Pharrell Williams wrote and performed for the soundtrack of his Lego-based animated biographical documentary film of the same name. It takes us on a journey from Pharrell's first foray into the music world right up to his current stature as a cultural force to be reckoned with.
  • The song is relentlessly upbeat, life-affirming, and laced with a delightful touch of Pharrell's characteristic optimism. Think of it as part-memoir, part-rallying cry. Pharrell reflects on the work ethic and drive that carried him from a humble start to the neon-lit heights of success. And, of course, there are subtle nods to the iconic Lego blocks, as Pharrell declares:

    Finding and breaking miracles to
We keep stackin' high, high, high
Piece by piece, piece by piece, piece by piece
  • Pharrell enlisted the Fabulous Marching Cavaliers from Princess Anne High School to lend a brass-laden boost to the track. Princess Anne High School is Pharrell's alma mater, located in Virginia Beach where he grew up. This collaboration adds a personal touch to the song, connecting Pharrell's past directly to his present in a lively symphony of sounds.
  • The video for "Piece by Piece" was directed by Morgan Neville, who also helmed the feature film. It shows Pharrell working in his studio and performing at his Something In The Water festival. There's also a nod to his synesthesia, as vivid hues and shapes appear, showing us how Pharrell "sees" music.
  • The track is the second song on the soundtrack album, following the short introductory track "It's Happening." It sets the tone for a journey of relentless creativity and self-discovery, naturally, one brick at a time.
