She told Songfacts: "My father wrote the song as an instrumental piece in 2011 and I always loved the melody. On the original version, I sang vocalese in the background. I thought it would be fun to re-vamp the song and put it in a new style, so my producer, Jason Miles, helped to make a new arrangement for it and it was really vibey and had an original sound!
  
  The song was inspired by a crush I had in college that turned into my boyfriend. We were friends for a couple years before dating, and had a very flirty relationship before making things 'official.'"
