This is a track from Russian–American alternative singer-songwriter Regina Spektor's sixth album, What We Saw From The Cheap Seats. The record is a collection of new material along with the very first studio recordings of several of Spektor's older live songs. This one, for instance she told NME that she penned, "when I was still living at my parents' house, so that's maybe 2003 or 2004."
"Piano Man" was inspired by Billy Joel's time playing at a piano bar in Los Angeles. The "real estate novelist" was a guy who always talked about writing a book, but spent all his spare time in the bar.
