Songfacts®:

  • This ode to unrequited love was sung by Renée Elise Goldsberry in the original Hamilton Broadway production. The song is delivered in the show's first act by Goldsberry's character Angelica Schulyer towards the titular Alexander Hamilton, a man whom she secretly loves.
  • The show's creator Lin-Manuel Miranda told The Hollywood Reporter in August 2015 that the song was among the most difficult he's ever written, and that Goldsberry's delivery of the rapid-fire verses consistently bowled him over.

"The lyrics…are some of the most intricate I've ever written," he said. "I can't even rap them, but Renée Elise Goldsberry, who plays Angelica - that's her conversational speed. That's how fast she thinks. You really get the sense that Angelica's the smartest person in the room, and she reads Hamilton within a moment of meeting him."
  • Goldsberry won the 2016 Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical for her performance in Hamilton.
  • Sia, Queen Latifah and Miguel covered the song for the Hamilton Mixtape. Sia and Queen Latifah take turns singing and rapping Angelica Schulyer's lines while Miguel sings the Alexander Hamilton role. Lin-Manuel Miranda told iHeartRadio:

"Sia was one of the first people to turn in her contribution to this mixtape, and she actually recorded her vocals over our existing track. She sort of took out the vocals from 'Satisfied' on the cast album and recorded her vocals over that. The looks on all our faces when we heard it."
