Songfacts®:

  • According to Thomas Hischak in The Tin Pan Alley Song Encyclopedia, "It's Tulip Time In Holland" was Richard A. Whiting's first hit song, although he ended up sharing none of the profits. This was because he sold his share of the rights to a publisher for a Steinway piano. The song went on to sell a million and a half copies of the sheet music, and features in at least two films: Hello, Frisco, Hello, (1943) and April Showers, (1948).
  • Its full title is actually "It's Tulip Time In Holland (Two Lips Are Calling Me)" - with the brackets on the sheet music, published by Jerome H. Remick. This somewhat forgettable song in 2/4 time was co-written by lyricist Dave Radford. The Henry Burr recording reached #5 in December 1915. More discerning flower lovers may prefer the Max Bygraves recording "Tulips From Amsterdam." >>>
