Songfacts®:

  • English DJ and record producer Sammy Virji attended Newcastle University before abandoning it for the siren call of beats and bass. He began carving out his niche in the UK's electronic underground and released his debut album in 2020, Spice Up.

Virji started out working in bassline, but has since refined his sound into a sharper, more sophisticated strain of UK garage. His breakthrough came with his 2023 single "If U Need It," which broke into the UK singles chart at #85. This high-octane UK garage banger features grime legend Skepta.
  • Skepta's rhymes draw on his North London roots and the playful, rebellious spirit of his youth. The lyrics reference his upbringing:

A little bad boy from Tottenham, dots I was shotting, playing cops and robbers

But in true rags-to-riches form, it soon pivots to:

Now, whips - I'm copping 'em, champagne -poppin' 'em
Hands in the air like, who's got a problem?
  • This isn't Skepta's first foray into the world of dance music. "Cops & Robbers" follows some house music cuts, including his UK Top 40 tribute to Amy Winehouse, "Can't Play Myself (A Tribute To Amy)."
  • Sammy Virji incorporates elements from Brandy's "I Wanna Be Down" and Kid Cudi's "Day 'N' Nite," blending them into the energetic UK garage production that underpins Skepta's verses.
  • Sammy Virji got a behind-the-scenes look at Skepta's process when they worked on "Cops and Robbers." Skepta set the vibe by putting a UK Garage documentary on mute. "We must have sat there for half an hour with the beat on repeat, he told The Guardian. "No one saying anything, until he goes, 'OK, I'm ready to record.'"

Virji was struck by how Skepta hadn't written a single lyric down. It was all stored in his head.
