Songfacts®:

  • Sasha Sloan pairs with Sam Hunt for this vulnerable ballad that finds the two trying to pinpoint what precise moment led to the demise of their relationship.
  • Sasha Sloan begins the song by lobbing a series of questions to Hunt, asking when he decided their relationship was over. She ponders if it was the first time he saw her drunk or the get together when she was indifferent towards his friends.

Hunt takes the baton in the second verse. He too wants to know what ended their romance. Full of anguish, he wonders if she first pulled away when he was unsympathetic after she had a fight with her mother, or was it the third time they ran into one of his exes? He concludes by questioning if she ever really did love him, or if it was all pretend.
  • On the chorus, both artists lament that though the relationship has reached its end, they cannot move on. Sasha Sloan said of the song, "'When Was It Over?' is about not being able to let go of someone even when you know there's nothing left."
  • Sasha Sloan and Sam Hunt wrote "When Was It Over?" with:

Nashville songwriter Shane McAnally. He has co-penned numerous hit country songs, including Sam Hunt's "Body Like a Back Road."

Sasha's Sloan's romantic partner, King Henry, who has had songs recorded by the likes of Major Lazer ("Cold Water") and Beyoncé ("All Night").

    Dublin-based producer Emi Dragoi.
  • It was Shane McAnally who brought the title into the room, and Sloan and Hunt both loved the idea. The rest of the song quickly fell into place.
  • King Henry also produced the track and played the guitar, drum machine and banjo.
