Songfacts®:

  • "In The Grey" is the first new song released by Shadows Fall in 12 years. The Boston metalcore band went on hiatus in 2015 but reunited to play a concert in December 2021, and released this song on December 6, 2024, after inking a new record deal with MNRK Heavy.
  • For the uninitiated, Shadows Fall was a big deal in the late '90s and early 2000s, releasing seven albums between 1997 and 2012 before hitting pause in 2015. "In The Grey" features their classic lineup:

    Brian Fair (vocals)
    Jonathan Donais (guitar)
    Matt Bachand (guitar)
    Paul Romanko (bass)
    Jason Bittner (drums)
  • A full-throttle, riff-heavy thrasher, "In The Grey" is both a nostalgic nod to the band's heyday and a headbanging manifesto for anyone who thought metalcore was getting soft. The track alternates between guttural verses and clean-sung choruses, creating that signature Shadows Fall sound: aggressive enough to terrify your neighbors, yet melodic enough to hum along while you do it.
  • Lyrically, the song tackles depression. Fair details the mental struggle, likening it to being crushed by gravity or drowning in dark waters.

"That feeling that the weight of gravity is crashing down on you or being trapped in the dark waters of our own mind, trying to rise to the surface and take a breath," he explained, before offering a glimmer of hope. "There is always a light at the end of that tunnel. We always need to keep striving for a brighter day and escaping the grey."
  • Chris "Zeuss" Harris, known for his work with other metal acts like Hatebreed and Rob Zombie, produced the track.
  • Shadows Fall performed "In The Grey" live for the first time during their headlining concert on December 21, 2024 at the Palladium in Worcester, Massachusetts.
