Songfacts®:

  • This soulful boogie was released as the second single from Shawn Mendes' third album just at the stroke of midnight on March 23, 2018.

    Do you got plans tonight?
I'm a couple hundred miles from Japan
And I was thinking I could fly to your hotel tonight
Cause I can't get you off my mind

Shawn is ready to fly across the seas to be closer to his love interest.
  • Mendes revealed to Billboard. that "Lost In Japan" was inspired by a night time slumber. "I had this dream that I was lost in this country," he said, "and I woke up the next day and we had this cool piano part and the song was birthed."
  • The song incorporates bouncy R&B beats and funky melodies, which Shawn said was inspired by all of the Justin Timberlake music he was listening to at the time.
  • A remix of "Lost in Japan" by German producer Zedd was released on September 27, 2018.
  • A video was released for the Zedd-assisted remix, in which both Norwegian actress Alisha Boe and the German producer make guest appearances. The clip is a recreation of Sofia Coppola's 2003 movie Lost In Translation.
