Songfacts®:

  • The singer known as Sheila (Annie Chancel) is little known outside her native France - with good reason - but this was a massive hit thanks to the prodigious talents of Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards.

At this time the two men were at the height of their powers both with their own band Chic and making hits for others. The Chic influence can be heard clearly on this song, which the two Americans wrote as well as produced.

Released as Sheila B. Devotion (and Sheila & B Devotion) on the Carrere label, it was a natural for the disco era. Backed by "Don't Go," the extended version runs to 6 minutes 15 seconds. >>>

  • The song is about a man whose charm is out of this world. He might literally be an astronaut, but it's more likely that this star chaser is simply smooth with the ladies.

He puts his life on the line ever time he's in flight
    A man you can't trace"
