Songfacts®:

  • "The Forest Is The Path" is the title track and closing song of Snow Patrol's first album since the band lost two of its members, drummer Johnny Quinn and bassist Paul Wilson, in 2023.

Produced by Fraser T Smith, who's worked with the likes of Adele and Stormzy, the record marks a significant shift for the band. After five albums with longtime producer Garret "Jacknife" Lee - a man who's practically family to Snow Patrol, being the godfather to both vocalist Gary Lightbody and keyboardist Johnny McDaid's kids - the decision to switch gears wasn't an easy one. "We've worked together for 20 years," Lightbody told The Sun. "But we needed to test ourselves, try something new."
  • "The Forest Is The Path" is a deeply introspective song brimming with raw emotion and vulnerability. It's about love and heartbreak, but with the added depth of hindsight. As Lightbody explained, the album explores "looking at love from the distance of time passed."
  • The forest serves as a metaphor for navigating the tricky terrain of the heart.

"There's a forest near my house," Lightbody told The Guardian, "and I walk in it every day. I got lost recently, which is kind of what this album is about - being lost, and being OK with it. For so many years, I felt lost and I wasn't OK."
  • McDaid's partner, Friends star Courteney Cox, and guitarist Nathan Connolly's partner, Bad Sisters actor Sarah Greene, lend their voices to the backing vocals along with the three band members.
  • The song took root in string arranger Michael Keeney's studio, where Connolly started riffing on a lead line. "I recorded it on my phone," Lightbody told Apple Music. "I took it home, built the song around it on GarageBand, and sent it to Fraser, and the thing that goes the whole way through the song, Nathan's guitar, that's the recording on my phone.

I find that a quite nice way to finish a record - the spontaneity captured in one moment without having to go, 'OK, well let's go and set up the microphones.' It was just like, 'Oh, I love that, can I use that?'"
  • Gary Lightbody used to retreat to secluded spots to pen his lyrics in solitude. But for The Forest is the Path, Johnny McDaid challenged him to take a different approach. Instead of retreating, Lightbody wrote the lyrics on the same day they created the music in the studio. This shift not only sped up the creative process but also gave the album an immediate and fresh energy.
  • Released in 2024, The Forest Is The Path went straight to #1 on the UK albums chart, marking Snow Patrol's second chart-topper following 2006's Eyes Open.
