This was the first song written for The Eternal. Guitarist Thurston Moore told Billboard magazine that it was inspired by the Oregon punk rock group, The Wipers. He explained: "When I started writing, I was immersed in listening to the Wipers.. "'No Way,' the first song we recorded, has a total Wipers vibe, if the Wipers were a No Wave band."
The band described this in publicity materials as "a confrontation with the devil in his guise of temptation and staking a distinct place amongst the black legions."
Movie director Michel Gondry played live drums on the Late Registration track, "Diamonds From Sierra Leone." The Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind filmmaker happened to be in the studio on a day when producer Jon Brion was setting up a drum kit
"Pretty In Pink" by Psychedelic Furs was released in 1981. Five years later, it inspired a movie of the same name starring Molly Ringwald, Andrew McCarthy and Jon Cryer. The song was remixed for the re-release to have more Pop appeal.
