This song was written by Split Enz frontman Neil Finn, who has dedicated the song to his wife, Sharon, whom he married in 1982. Split Enz was formed in Auckland in 1972 by Neil's brother Tim, and in 1977 the 18-year-old Neil joined the group. In 1985, the group split, and Neil formed Crowded House with drummer Paul Hester.
The video for this song sees the debut of Paul Hester with Split Enz, accompanying Noel Crombie on percussion. Hester would later officially join the band for See Ya Round, the final Split Enz LP.

Melinda from AustraliaThis has got to be one of the beautiful love songs from the 80’s. And wisely re-released in the 1990’s. You can hear the love. And the honesty in the lyrics. It’s a very well known song in Australia. It probably didn’t get picked up by radios in the UK or the U.S back in the day. Which is a shame. The song by them, It’s Only Natural, is really nice too. But that was when they became a band with a new name. Called Crowded House . It’s interesting that a lot of Split Enz and Crowded House songs have become Australian and New Zealand anthems. They deserve to be. We all know and love them.
Who writes a song about a name they found in a phone book? That's just one of the everyday things these guys find to sing about. Anything in their field of vision or general scope of knowledge is fair game. If you cross paths with them, so are you.
