  • Switchfoot frontman Jon Foreman wrote this song when he was 24 years old, hence the title. The number also has significance because there are 24 hours in a day. It all got him thinking about how there are many different facets to our personalities, and we can take our lives in so many different directions.

"Any decision in our lives, whether it's moral or not, there's a million different ways we can respond," he told Jesus Freak Hideout. "There's all these things bouncing through your head. 'Twenty-Four' is about wanting to be united into one person.
  • A lot of Switchfoot's music is inspired by the Bible and reflects their Christian belief. Jon Foreman says this song owes to Deuteronomy 6:4-15, which is about loving God with your whole self:

Hear, O Israel, the Lord your God is one.
And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.
  • "Twenty-Four" is the last song on Switchfoot's 2003 album The Beautiful Letdown, their first after signing with Columbia Records. It took a while for the label to get everything in order for the release, so by the time it came out, Jon Foreman was 26.
  • This song is very important to The Jonas Brothers, who are big Switchfoot fans. Nick Jonas - the youngest in the group - says it's the song his brothers Kevin and Joe were playing when he asked them to join.

On August 8, 2025, The Jonas Brothers released an album called Greetings From Your Hometown with a title track co-written by Jon and Tim Foreman of Switchfoot. Two days later, they brought Switchfoot out to perform with them as special guests at their tour opener in New Jersey.

Nick Jonas told this story: "I heard Kevin and Joe playing and singing this song together - it was called 'Twenty-Four' by the band Switchfoot. They sounded incredible, and the song was so inspiring to all of us. The album, The Beautiful Letdown, changed our lives. I was 11 or 12 at the time. I walked over and said, 'Hey guys, want to write a song together?' The first song we ever wrote together was because this band made that album and wrote this song, 'Twenty-Four.'"
  • Tyler Joseph of Twenty One Pilots recorded this song in 2023 for a 20th anniversary edition of The Beautiful Letdown album. Other Switchfoot fans to cover their songs for the project include Ingrid Andress, Noah Gundersen and Ryan Tedder.
